Odakyu
Electric Railway Company
Founded as Odawara Express Railway Co., Ltd. in May 1923, Odakyu
Electric Railway Company currently operates three railway lines
in the Tokyo metropolitan area: the Odawara line, the Enoshima
line, and the Tama line.
These lines extend over 75
miles (120.5 km) and carry an average of 1.84 million passengers
daily, or over 670 million passengers a year. They serve as key
commuter lines for students and business people by linking the
stations along each line to Shinjuku, Tokyo's new city center.
They also fill an important role as transportation routes to
tourist attractions such as Fuji/Hakone--one of Japan's most
famous hot spring resort areas--and Enoshima, the site of Japan's
most famous ocean resort.
Hakone
Tozan Railway runs in the mountainous section between Odawara
and Gora. It is famous for the stunning scenery and hydrangea
along the line, which gave it the nickname "Hydrangea Train."
Hakone is a world-famous hot spring resort area with spectacular
views of Mt. Fuji. Over 20 million tourists visit Hakone every
year. Service from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto began in August
1950. Today four models of Romance Car (the 7000, 10000, 20000,
and 30000 series) operate between these two stations among other
commuter trains.
In Train Simulator you can
drive a Romance Car 7000 Series, which originates in the
Shinjuku skyscrapers and runs through both wealthy suburban
neighborhoods and the Tanzawa mountain region. Alternatively you
can drive a stainless steel commuter train, the 2000 Series,
which stops at every station between Shinjuku and Hon-Atsugi.
THE
2000 SERIES
The Odakyu Electric Railway Company's 2000 Series electric
railcar was built according to the concept of "Kind to
People and Environments," and was nominated for the "Good
Design Award" by the Japan Industrial Design Promotion
Organization. This series is based on the 1000 Series and
incorporates improvements such as wheelchair accessibility and
noise reduction of on-board equipment.
THE
7000 SERIES
The Odakyu 7000 Series, also called the LSE (Luxury Super
Express), won the Blue Ribbon Award from the Japanese Railway
Friendship Club (Tetsudou Tomonokai) in 1981. After 1995, the
7000 Series was rebuilt with a new exterior paint scheme and a
new interior design aimed to appeal to shoppers, students, and
business people as well as tourists. The Romance Car, unlike the
commuter trains, makes only a few stops and requires all
passengers to reserve their seats, which makes the ride more
comfortable. It takes the passengers from Shinjuku station to
Hakone Tozan Railway's Hakone-Yumoto station in approximately
one hour and thirty minutes.
The operator's cab is on
the second level of the train, and the lower level consists of
passenger seats with a panoramic view. It reaches a maximum
speed of 68 mph (110 km/h).
